Investing a little bit of time and effort, plus some cash, on pleasing your customers can bring long term results. By making your customers feel wanted and well cared for, you are making them more likely to want to come back and more likely even to just remember your business. Giving your customers that well looked after and wanted feeling doesn’t mean a huge expense, it can be done quite cheaply. Keith Lunt looks at promotional gifts and their effect on your customers.
Corporate promotional gifts are for just that. Items that will entice your customers back. An act as simple as giving your customers a free gift at Christmas can be remembered for months to come. Maybe then for the following year they will make sure that they are repeat customers once more to see what gifts you give them then.
To instil this feeling of being wanted and wanting to return to you, some clever marketers will give out a range of gifts. This isn’t done quietly, it is done publicly. You let your customers know that those that are there often and spend a minimal amount are rewarded with free gifts that doesn’t cost the earth, and they see that those that are more frequent buyers get slightly better gifts. This continues up the chain.
Some may worry this tactic brings jealousy, but when you think it through you realise that it is nothing more than a reward for loyal custom. Those that are worth most get the best rewards. They see they are really valued and continue their custom. And quite often in business it is just this top level of customers that do bring in most of the profit, so they deserve top rewards.
But what of those a rung or two down the ladder? Are they being ignored? No, they are still getting promotional gifts that are free gifts and see that it is a gift of high value than the steps below. You are assuring them that they are worth something to you. But they are seeing the gift to the next level up and are slightly tempted to pass more business your way next year and aim for the next level. It may sound daft, but it is the human mind.
This works well within the business to business sector, where the contact you are dealing with may well be spending the company’s money, not their own. You are encouraging them to come and buy from you, rather than your competitors. Will they really mind if the price is a little bit more, when it is not their cash that is being spent and there is a chance of much better gifts next Christmas!
