Here once again, we’re in tax season. Unless you’re one of those lucky people, with a simple, straightforward tax filing situation, you probably have not yet filed. As you struggle to just keep your regular life on an even keel, that nagging thought sits in your consciousness every day. Perhaps you’ve already paid a visit to the IRS official website, browsing through the online tax forms and publications that may pertain to you, in an attempt to get your ducks in a row before you roll up your sleeves and tackle the odious task.
Unfortunately, most American taxpayers experience a certain amount of fear associated with doing the yearly deed, which probably has a lot to do with the large number of taxpayers who procrastinate. This fear does not arise out of trying to cheat the tax man, but rather out of fear of not completing the tax return properly, or having Mr. Tax Man cheat us!
Browsing through the online tax forms and matching publications is not the most efficient way to approach the task. In fact, this strategy might well drive you crazy with all kinds of erroneous assumptions. Let’s face it. While, presumably, these forms, schedules and attending tax publications are written by native English speakers, which should make these online tax forms and their explanatory publications easy to understand, it just isn’t so! Why? Because the IRS has taken perfectly normal, well educated persons and added a twist to their English language skills which defy common usage. I call it IRS-eze.
Should you have tax questions pertaining to your filing status and business situation, your best starting point is a visit to a tax professional. Write out a profile of your situation and let them advise you as to which online tax forms you’ll need. just in order to keep up to date from last year, these professional tax preparers attend any number of seminars and workshops each year. As they say, a miss is as good as a mile, so if you think you were all up to snuff in your understanding last year, you are indisputably out of date and misinformed this year! Once the tax preparer has enlightened you as to which documents and accompanying online tax forms you’ll need, you’ve got a start. Get those and assemble your documents. Veer neither to left or right, should you spot some online tax form that appears to suit your situation perfectly. Remember, these publications aren’t straight English!
You have to wonder about the differences between the tax software programs and the IRS publications and online tax forms. Why has not the IRS developed their own fool proof tax preparation software, asking questions of the user in plain English in a sequential, cover-all-the-bases manner, leading you to an accurate tax return? That’s really all the average taxpayer wants. Supply the figures and get it over with!
The online tax forms and associated tax publications are living proof that these are documents that are crying out to be rewritten, in plain English that everyone can understand. Then, we wouldn’t need tax preparation software.
